.
They laid their hands upon him;
he carried all their shame.
He stood in silence
at their accusations.
.
He bore the sins of everyone
outside the city gates,
until He had removed them
absolutely.
.
The wonder of the ritual
is the scapegoat gets to live,
and all whose sins he bears
are thus redeemed.
.
Christ Jesus is our scapegoat;
our sins He bore to death,
but life was His by right,
and death had no hold on Him.
The life He took back to Him
He offers unto us,
says, “Come, redeemed, walk with me
into freedom!”
.
At the centre point of history,
God turned back time.
.
In the person of His Son
He walked again with Man.
.
Born of Adam’s fallen race,
He drew men back to faith,
then bore the unmaking
of His mortal form,
the marring and disfiguring
of the Father’s image,
until at last,
nailed to a cross,
and bearing all our sins,
His Life had been extinguished.
.
They laid His body down to rest,
an empty, void and formless thing,
as Earth had been at the beginning.
.
There within the darkness
of that tomb,
God’s Spirit hovered,
brooding in anticipation
of the word yet to be spoken,
of the coming new Creation;
the third day when death itself
would be undone!
